Microgreen Seed Calculator

Pick a microgreen, your tray (10 × 10 inch or any size) and how many trays you're sowing. You'll get the grams to weigh out, when to soak, uncover and harvest, and the harvest to expect. Results adjust to the temperature where you grow.

Quantities are for medium-density sowing in a 10 × 10 inch tray. For a 10 × 20 tray, double them. Dark period and harvest days are counted from sowing at 20–30°C, at the young harvest stage we use at BageechaBox. Most trays are uncovered within 2–3 days; amaranth is the longest at 4–5 days. Growth slows in cool weather; very hot weather can speed it up slightly, but only if seeds germinate well. Greens with the same colour dot grow well together. Treat all of it as a starting point and adjust from your own harvests.

    Common questions

How much seed do I need for a 10×10 inch microgreen tray?

It depends on seed size. Tiny seeds need very little: basil 3–4 g and amaranth 4–5 g per 10×10 tray. Radish needs 15–18 g, fenugreek (methi) 30–35 g and moong 40–50 g, while large seeds like sunflower and wheatgrass need 60–80 g and pea 70–100 g.

How do I work out seed for a 10×20 inch tray?

A 10×20 tray has twice the area of a 10×10 tray, so use double the seed. The calculator above scales the amount to any tray size, including custom sizes.

    Which microgreen seeds need soaking?

Amaranth, basil, broccoli, cabbage, clover, kale, purple kale, mustard, pak choi, purple sango radish, rocket and turnip are sown dry. Alfalfa, radish and China Rose radish soak 4–6 hours; beetroot, methi and moong 6–8 hours; and pea, sunflower, wheatgrass, coriander and spinach 8–12 hours.

How long is the dark period for microgreens?

After sowing, trays are kept covered or stacked in the dark while seeds root. Alfalfa and wheatgrass need about 2 days; most others, including broccoli, cabbage, kale, radish, turnip, pak choi, clover, methi, moong and spinach, need 2–3 days; larger or slower seeds such as pea, sunflower, beetroot, mustard, rocket, basil and coriander are uncovered on day 3; and amaranth is the longest at 4–5 days.

How many days until microgreens are ready to harvest?

At BageechaBox we harvest young. Moong is ready in 5–7 days, radish, China Rose radish and methi in 6–8 days (radish is usually ready around day 7), and alfalfa and purple sango radish in 7–10 days. Most brassicas such as broccoli, cabbage and mustard take 8–12 days, with turnip and pak choi at 8–10 days. Pea and sunflower take 8–12 days and wheatgrass 8–10 days. Beetroot and spinach take 10–14 days, purple kale 10–12 days, basil 12–14 days, and coriander is the slowest at 14–21 days. Cool weather slows growth; very hot weather can speed it up slightly, but only if seeds germinate well.

Which microgreens can I grow together?

Grow together greens that are ready at the same time and prepared the same way. Broccoli, cabbage, kale, purple kale, mustard, pak choi, turnip and rocket share a tray well. Pea, sunflower and wheatgrass soak together and grow at a similar pace. Moong, methi, alfalfa and clover are quick, mild legumes. Beetroot, amaranth and spinach take 10–14 days. Basil and coriander are slower, so start them first. Where you can, keep one variety per tray, and never put big seeds next to tiny ones.

    Why use medium sowing density?

These quantities are set for medium-density sowing, which gives better airflow, healthier stems and fewer fungal problems than packing seed too tightly. That matters even more in Indian heat and humidity.
