From Classroom to Cultivation: Sonia Pardasani's Journey with BageechaBox

Sonia Pardasani — Founder, BageechaBox

For more than two decades, Sonia Pardasani's journey to work regularly took her past AIIMS in New Delhi. What stayed with her was not the hospital building itself, but the long queues of patients and families waiting outside. It left her with a recurring question: what can an ordinary citizen do to make even a small difference?

Sonia knew she was not a doctor, and that healthy food could never replace medical care. But she began thinking about what happens much earlier — inside our homes, kitchens, and everyday routines. Could people become more conscious of what they eat? Could families become more involved in growing some of their own food? Could better awareness around nutrition become part of everyday life?

That question eventually gave her a direction. And that direction became BageechaBox.

The Teacher Who Never Stopped Teaching

Before becoming an entrepreneur, Sonia spent years as a teacher. Although she eventually stepped away from the traditional classroom, her instinct to educate, simplify, and build confidence never left her.

When she began exploring microgreens, she noticed that growing them appeared simple but could quickly become confusing for beginners. Which seeds should they use? How much water was enough? How much light was required? Why did one tray grow successfully while another failed? Information was available, but much of it was fragmented or not suited to Indian growing conditions.

For Sonia, this was not simply a business opportunity. It was an education problem — and education was something she understood. BageechaBox therefore developed around a simple idea: don't just sell people what they need to grow — teach them how to grow successfully.

Today, BageechaBox supplies microgreen seeds and growing essentials across India, provides freshly harvested microgreens in Delhi-NCR, conducts workshops and training, and guides people interested in starting commercial microgreen ventures. More than 2,000 people have participated in the BageechaBox learning ecosystem, including homemakers, schoolchildren, college students, corporate professionals, working adults, Gen Z participants, and members of Resident Welfare Associations.

Different people arrive with different motivations, but many begin with the same hesitation: "Can I really grow this myself?" For Sonia, the most rewarding moment is watching that uncertainty turn into confidence.

"People often come to me saying, 'I can't grow anything.' Then they sow their first tray, watch it change every day, and finally harvest something they have grown themselves. That confidence is what excites me most."

As BageechaBox grew, so did the questions. Some people wanted to grow for their families. Others wanted to understand the process more deeply. Increasingly, aspiring entrepreneurs began asking whether microgreens could become a viable business. That led Sonia to expand into practical commercial guidance covering growing systems, racks, lighting, crop planning, seed selection, and other aspects of setting up an indoor microgreen operation.

Technology has also extended her classroom. Through Ask Sonia, BageechaBox's digital microgreens help centre, growers can seek guidance on germination, watering, mould, harvesting, and common growing challenges.

Entrepreneurship, however, has also made Sonia a student again. She has had to learn about cultivation, packaging, sourcing, logistics, digital commerce, and the realities of building an urban agriculture business. For her, every challenge becomes another lesson.

Sonia does not believe microgreens will solve India's health challenges, nor does she believe everyone needs to become an urban farmer. Her purpose is simpler: to help people become more curious about their food, more confident about growing it, and more aware that meaningful change can begin with small everyday choices.

Her surroundings may have changed since her days in a traditional classroom. There are now trays instead of textbooks, and seeds instead of lesson plans. But perhaps the profession itself never really changed. Sonia Pardasani is still teaching. Only now, many of her lessons begin with a handful of seeds.

"Meaningful change doesn't always have to begin on a massive scale. Sometimes it can begin in one home, with one tray, and with someone discovering that they have the ability to grow."
