How to grow basil microgreens

  1. Don't soak. Basil seeds turn gel-like when wet, so sow them dry.

  2. Sow 3–4 g per 10×10 tray. Scatter thinly over moist cocopeat — the seeds are tiny.

  3. Mist and keep dark for 3 days. Mist gently and cover the tray.

  4. Move to bright light and keep warm. Bright indirect sunlight or a grow light, at 22–30°C.

  5. Harvest at 2–3 inches. Usually day 12–14 — cut just above the base.

Timings are starting estimates. Results vary with seed density, growing medium, temperature, light and watering. Read the full growing guide →

Questions growers ask

How many trays will one pack grow?

At 3–4 g per 10×10 tray, a 50 g pack sows about 12–16 trays.

Why shouldn't I soak basil seeds?

Basil seeds form a gel coating as soon as they get wet, which makes them clump. Sow them dry onto moist cocopeat and mist them instead.

Can I grow basil in cold weather?

Basil needs warmth (22–30°C). In cooler months, grow it indoors in your warmest spot or under a grow light, and expect slower growth.
