How to Grow Microgreens at Home in India — Complete Guide
Microgreens are the fastest, simplest food you can grow at home in India. A 10×10 inch tray, some cocopeat setup, seeds, and a sunny window — that's all you need to get started.
What You Need
- 2 trays — one with holes, one solid (10×10 inch)
- 4 cocopeat discs (42mm)
- Seeds — start with Radish or Fenugreek
- A sunny window or grow light
- Clean water
Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Day 0 — Sow: Hydrate cocopeat (press test — no dripping), spread seeds evenly, press gently into medium, cover with solid tray.
Days 1–3 — blackout stage: Keep covered in a dark spot. In summer: 1.5–2 days. In winter: 2–3 days. Keep a window open for airflow.
Days 3–10 — Light and Water: Move to indirect sunlight 3–4 hours daily. bottom watering only — lift top tray, pour 80–100ml into bottom tray, lower back. Check daily.
Day 8–10 — harvest: Cut just above cocopeat when first true leaves appear. Store dry in fridge. Wash just before eating.
Best Varieties for Beginners
- Radish (Mooli): Fastest, most forgiving. Ready in 8–10 days.
- Fenugreek (Methi): Fragrant, very easy. Best in winter.
- Mustard (Sarson): Spicy, fast, reliable year-round.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ❌ Watering from the top — always bottom water after germination
- ❌ Cocopeat too wet — do the press test before sowing
- ❌ No airflow — always keep a window open
- ❌ Too long in blackout — check at 36 hours in summer
