Watering is where most beginners go wrong. Too much water causes mold and root rot. Too little causes dry, stunted crops. The bottom watering method eliminates both risks.
The Bottom Watering Method
Instead of pouring or misting water over the canopy, add water to the solid tray below the growing tray. Cocopeat draws moisture up through the drainage holes by capillary action, keeping the surface and canopy dry while the roots stay hydrated.
- Pour 100–150ml of water into the solid bottom tray
- Let it absorb for 20–30 minutes
- Check the squeeze test — cocopeat should feel damp but not dripping
- Tip out any standing water left in the solid tray after 30 minutes
How Often to Water
| Stage | Frequency |
| Blackout stage | Check once at 24 hours. Water only if cocopeat feels dry to the touch. |
| After blackout — winter | Every 2 days typically |
| After blackout — summer | Once daily, sometimes twice in 40°C+ heat |
Signs You're Overwatering
- 🟥 Cocopeat stays dark and heavy between waterings
- 🟥 Musty smell coming from the tray
- 🟥 White fuzzy mold appearing on the surface
- 🟥 Lower leaves yellowing
