Which Microgreen Seeds Need Soaking?
Soaking is essential for some varieties and actively harmful for others. Here's the complete guide for Indian home growers.
Seeds That MUST Be Soaked
| Variety | Soak Time |
| Fenugreek (Methi) | 6–8 hours |
| Pea shoots | 8–12 hours |
| Wheatgrass | 8–12 hours |
| Sunflower | 4–6 hours (hull removal optional) |
Seeds That Must NEVER Be Soaked
These form a gel or mucilage coating when wet that prevents proper germination. Sow them completely dry:
- Basil — forms thick gel when wet
- Radish — germinates within 24 hours without soaking
- Mustard, Broccoli, Cress — all fast germinators, no soaking needed
- Chia — forms gel layer, sow dry
After Soaking — Sow Immediately
Drain soaked seeds through a colander. Rinse once with fresh water. Spread immediately on prepared cocopeat — don't let them sit more than 2 hours or they may begin to ferment. Ready to sow your seeds.
