Which Microgreen Seeds Need Soaking?

Soaking is essential for some varieties and actively harmful for others. Here's the complete guide for Indian home growers.

Seeds That MUST Be Soaked

Variety Soak Time
Fenugreek (Methi) 6–8 hours
Pea shoots 8–12 hours
Wheatgrass 8–12 hours
Sunflower 4–6 hours (hull removal optional)

Seeds That Must NEVER Be Soaked

These form a gel or mucilage coating when wet that prevents proper germination. Sow them completely dry:

  • Basil — forms thick gel when wet
  • Radish — germinates within 24 hours without soaking
  • Mustard, Broccoli, Cress — all fast germinators, no soaking needed
  • Chia — forms gel layer, sow dry

After Soaking — Sow Immediately

Drain soaked seeds through a colander. Rinse once with fresh water. Spread immediately on prepared cocopeat — don't let them sit more than 2 hours or they may begin to ferment. Ready to sow your seeds.
