Good news — cocopeat can be reused 3–4 times. But reusing it incorrectly is one of the top causes of fungus in subsequent crops.
How Many Times Can You Reuse Cocopeat?
- Use 1 & 2: Full reuse — performance almost identical to fresh
- Use 3: Mix 50:50 with fresh cocopeat
- Use 4: Final use — compost after this batch
Step-by-Step Reuse Process
Step 1 — Remove All Roots
After harvest, remove the root mat completely. No root material should remain.
Step 2 — Sun Dry Fully
Spread in a flat layer and dry in direct sun for 1–2 full days. This kills most fungal spores. Non-negotiable — skipping this step causes mold.
Step 3 — Microwave if Contamination Was Present
If previous crop had fungus, microwave the dry cocopeat for 1–2 minutes. Cool completely before using.
Step 4 — Mix with Fresh From Use 3
50:50 ratio restores structure and reduces pathogen buildup. Re-hydrate and check watering correctly before sowing.
When NOT to Reuse
- ❌ Previous crop had heavy fungus or root rot
- ❌ Smells sour even after drying too fast
- ❌ Used more than 4 times
Tray Cleaning
Wash with soap, scrub root residue, dry in sun. Clean tray setup is the foundation of the next batch.
