Growing Microgreens in a Small Flat — No Balcony Needed

Microgreens tray on a kitchen shelf in a small flat

Quick answer: You don't need a balcony or terrace. One 10x10 inch tray takes up less space than a laptop, and two or three trays on a single kitchen shelf or windowsill can keep a small family in fresh microgreens. All you need is a bright spot (or a small grow light), a bit of airflow, and a tray set with a drainage tray underneath so nothing drips.

Many of the people in my workshops live in 1BHK and 2BHK flats in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. The first question is always: "Do I have enough space?" The answer is almost always yes.

What Fits Where

Space How many trays Notes
Windowsill 1–2 Avoid harsh afternoon sun on west-facing windows
One kitchen shelf 2–3 Keep away from the stove's heat
Small rack with grow light 4–8 Enough for a continuous supply — or a small side business

Setting Up, Step by Step

Step 1 — Pick the brightest indoor spot

Bright, indirect light is ideal. If your flat is dim, a full-spectrum LED grow light above the shelf solves it.

Step 2 — Use a two-tray set

A growing tray with holes sits inside a solid tray. You water into the bottom tray, so there are no drips on your shelf or floor.

Step 3 — Go mess-free with cocopeat discs

4 cocopeat discs per 10x10 tray, soaked and expanded — no bags of soil in your flat.

Step 4 — Keep some airflow

Small closed rooms trap moisture. A ceiling fan on low, or a small table fan nearby, keeps mould away.

Step 5 — Stagger your sowing

With limited space, sow one tray every few days so you always have one ready to eat. Our Grow Planner builds a plan for your household.

Best Varieties for Small Spaces

  • Radish, methi and moong — fast (5–8 days), so each tray frees up quickly
  • Mustard and broccoli — compact and reliable
  • Pea shoots — the most filling harvest per tray

⚡ Key Takeaways

  • A single shelf or windowsill is enough to start
  • Use a two-tray set and bottom watering for a drip-free setup
  • Add a grow light if your flat is dim
  • Stagger sowing so one tray is always ready

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I grow microgreens without a balcony?

Yes. A bright windowsill or a kitchen shelf works well. If your flat gets little light, add a small full-spectrum grow light.

Q: How much space does one tray need?

A 10x10 inch tray takes about the same space as a laptop. Two or three fit on a standard kitchen shelf.

Q: Will microgreens make my flat messy?

Not with cocopeat discs and a two-tray set. You water into the bottom tray, so there are no drips or loose soil.

Q: How many trays does a small family need?

Two or three trays sown a few days apart usually keep a small family supplied. Use our Grow Planner for an exact plan.
