Quick answer: Maharashtra has very different growing conditions depending on where you live. Mumbai's challenge is humidity, especially in the June–September monsoon — focus on airflow and medium sowing density. Pune's milder climate is one of the friendliest in western India, with a long, comfortable growing season. In hotter inland cities like Nagpur, summer heat is the main challenge. Across the state, October to February is the best time to grow.
We send seeds to Maharashtra every week, and the questions we get from Mumbai and Pune could not be more different. So instead of one-size-fits-all advice, here is a guide by city type.
Mumbai and the Konkan Coast
Warm all year with heavy monsoon rain and high humidity. Microgreens grow well, but mould is the risk.
- Best months: November to February, when humidity drops
- Monsoon (Jun–Sep): grow indoors with a small fan, sow at medium density, bottom water sparingly
- Best varieties: radish, moong, methi, amaranth, sunflower, basil
- Small flat? A single shelf by a bright window, or a grow light, is enough for a family
Pune
Pune's higher elevation gives it milder temperatures than Mumbai, and drier air outside the monsoon. It is one of the best cities in western India for microgreens.
- Best months: October to February, with cool mornings that suit peas, broccoli and kale
- Summer (Mar–May): warm and dry — keep trays indoors and check moisture daily
- Best varieties: almost everything, including cool-weather greens in winter
Nagpur and Inland Maharashtra
Very hot, dry summers. Treat it like Delhi or Hyderabad:
- Best months: November to February
- Summer: grow in the coolest room or an AC room; check cocopeat moisture twice a day
- Best summer varieties: moong, radish, methi, sunflower, basil
One Tool for Every City
Our Seed Calculator lets you enter your city and the temperature where your trays are. It then adjusts seed quantity, dark period and harvest timing for your conditions — so a Mumbai grower and a Nagpur grower get different, accurate advice.
