Indian summers between 35–45°C are brutal — but the right microgreens not only survive, they thrive. The key is knowing which varieties to choose, which to avoid, and how to adjust your growing process for the heat.
Why Summer Is Challenging for Microgreens
Heat accelerates germination (good) but also accelerates mold prevention growth, cocopeat drying, and bolting (bad). Above 32°C, delicate varieties stress and can develop off-flavours. High humidity in coastal cities like Mumbai and Chennai adds fungus risk. The solution is choosing heat-tolerant varieties and adjusting your technique.
Best Varieties for Indian Summer (April–June)
✅ Radish — #1 Summer Choice
Radish is the undisputed summer champion. Germinates in just 24–36 hours even in 40°C heat, grows fast, and is extremely forgiving. Harvest-ready in 8–10 days. The heat makes it slightly more peppery — which most people love.
✅ Mustard (Sarson)
Mustard is one of the most heat-tolerant microgreens available. Germinates within 12–24 hours in warm conditions, fills in densely, and is ready in 8–10 days.
✅ Sunflower
Sunflower loves warmth. Soak seeds for 8–12 hours before sowing, keep out of direct afternoon sun, and ensure excellent airflow to prevent hull mold in humid conditions. Harvest at Day 8–10 in summer.
✅ Amaranth (Chaulai)
A true heat lover — amaranth naturally grows in tropical climates. Beautiful pink-red stems, mild earthy flavour, rich in iron and calcium. One of the few microgreens that performs better in heat than in winter.
Varieties to AVOID in Indian Summer
- Pea Shoots — struggles above 30°C. Save for October–March.
- Wheatgrass — heat-sensitive, develops off-flavours above 32°C.
- Coriander — notoriously slow germinator, completely unpredictable in summer heat.
- Broccoli — germinates slowly in heat and is susceptible to fungus above 35°C.
Summer Growing Adjustments
- Grow in your coolest spot — AC room (22–25°C) is ideal.
- Shorten blackout to 1.5–2 days — seeds germinate faster in heat. Check at 36 hours.
- Check cocopeat twice daily — can dry in 2–3 hours in hot spots.
- Run a fan continuously — airflow is critical. Even a small USB fan prevents mold.
- Harvest 1–2 days earlier — microgreens can bolt if left too long in heat.
- Change soak water mid-soak — warm water ferments faster.
🏙️ North India (Delhi/NCR, Jaipur, Lucknow)
- May–June temps hit 45°C+ outdoors — grow only in AC (22–24°C)
- Blackout: 30–36 hours max — germination is very fast in heat
- Check cocopeat every 4–5 hours in non-AC rooms — it dries completely
- Grow only: Radish, Mustard, Amaranth in peak summer
- Harvest 1–2 days early — crops bolt fast in Delhi heat
🌊 South India & Coastal Cities (Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi)
- Humidity 70–90% creates perfect mold conditions — fan is non-negotiable
- Bottom water only — top watering in high humidity = fungus guaranteed
- Never cover tightly during blackout — leave a 1cm air gap
- Harvest at first sign of readiness — don't wait in coastal summers
- Bangalore exception: summers are mild (28–32°C) — full variety range still works
| Variety | Summer Days to Harvest | Heat Tolerance |
| Radish | 7–9 days | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent |
| Mustard | 7–9 days | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent |
| Amaranth | 10–12 days | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent |
| Sunflower | 9–11 days | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good |
