One of the most common mistakes beginners make is over-buying equipment. You don't need much to grow excellent microgreens at home. Here's exactly what you need — and what you can skip.
The Essential List
| Item | What to Get | Essential? |
| Growing tray | 10×10 inch tray with drainage holes | ✅ Yes |
| Solid tray | Same size, no holes — for bottom watering | ✅ Yes |
| Growing medium | Cocopeat discs — 25 per pack for 1 tray | ✅ Yes |
| Seeds | Start with radish, fenugreek, or mustard | ✅ Yes |
| Scissors | Clean, sharp kitchen scissors | ✅ Yes |
| Spray bottle | For initial misting after sowing only | ✅ Yes |
| Grow lights | Only if you don't have a sunny window | ⚡ Optional |
| Heat mat | Only for growing in North India winter | ⚡ Optional |
| Jute mats / coco mats | Alternative to cocopeat — not recommended for beginners | ❌ Skip |
What You Don't Need
- pH meter — not required for cocopeat growing
- Fertiliser — microgreens get all nutrition from the seed itself
- Humidity dome — causes more mold problems than it prevents
- Expensive LED panels — a basic 20W light bar is enough if you need artificial light
