Growing Microgreens in Punjab, UP and Rajasthan — A North India Guide

Pea microgreens – growing microgreens in North India winter

✍️ Sonia Pardasani, Founder BageechaBox | 🕐 5 min read | 📍 Regional Guide

Quick answer: Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan share Delhi's pattern — a blazing summer, a humid monsoon and a cold winter. October–November and February–March are the easiest months. In peak summer (especially in Rajasthan), grow indoors or in an AC room. In December–January, cold nights and fog slow growth, so keep trays in the warmest room and add a grow light if days are dull.

I grow in Delhi, so North Indian conditions are the ones I know best. Everything I teach in my Delhi workshops applies almost directly to Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Lucknow, Kanpur, Jaipur and Jodhpur — with a few local adjustments.

Your Growing Calendar

Season Conditions What to do
Oct – Nov, Feb – Mar Mild and pleasant Best months — grow everything
Dec – Jan Cold nights, fog, short days Warmest room, grow light if needed; expect a day or two extra
Apr – Jun Very hot (dry in Rajasthan) Indoors or AC room; heat-tolerant varieties
Jul – Sep Monsoon, humid Airflow, medium density, careful watering

State-by-State Notes

Punjab and Haryana

Cold, foggy winters are the main challenge. Peas, broccoli, kale, spinach and methi love the cool weather — just keep trays indoors overnight and give them light on grey days.

Uttar Pradesh

A long, hot summer and a humid monsoon. In summer, choose moong, radish, methi, sunflower and basil and keep trays out of the afternoon heat. In the monsoon, a small fan prevents most mould.

Rajasthan

Dry heat dries cocopeat very fast. Check trays twice a day in summer and grow in an AC room if you can — see our AC room guide. Winters are a joy for growing.

Winter Fog Tips

  • Keep trays warm: a kitchen shelf away from windows is often the warmest spot
  • Add light: on foggy days, a full-spectrum LED keeps stems sturdy instead of pale and leggy
  • Water less: cool rooms dry out slowly — bottom water only when the tray feels light
  • Tell the calculator: enter your room temperature in the Seed Calculator for adjusted timings
